The Syllabic Status of Postvocalic Resonants: Evidence from Global Sound Similarity Judgements
نویسنده
چکیده
1. INTRODUCTION. * In some traditional models of the syllable, it is assumed that the syllable is composed of onset, nucleus and coda, where the onset consists of prevocalic consonants, the coda of any postvocalic consonants and the nucleus of a vowel, diphthong or syllabic consonant (see Van der Hulst & Smith 1982). Derwing et al. (1988) questioned the sharp boundaries between the subsyllabic units, which are implicit in hierarchical syllable models.

Development of [j] in young, midwestern, American children.
Beginning at the age of about 14 months, eight children who lived in a rhotic dialect region of the United States were recorded approximately every 2 months interacting with their parents. All were recorded until at least the age of 26 months, and some until the age of 31 months. Acoustic analyses of speech samples indicated that these young children acquired [inverted r] production ability at ...
متن کاملSelective deficits in human audition: evidence from lesion studies
The human auditory cortex is the gateway to the most powerful and complex communication systems and yet relatively little is known about its functional organization as compared to the visual system. Several lines of evidence, predominantly from recent studies, indicate that sound recognition and sound localization are processed in two at least partially independent networks. Evidence from human...

متن کاملBunched /r/ promotes vowel merger to schwar: An ultrasound tongue imaging study of Scottish sociophonetic variation
For a century, phoneticians have noted a vowel merger in middle-class Scottish English, in the neutralisation of prerhotic checked vowels / /, / /, / / to a central vowel, e.g. fir, fur, fern [f ], [f ] [f n], or [f1], [f1], [f1n]. Working-class speakers often neutralise two of these checked vowels to a low back [ ] vowel, fir, fur, both pronounced as [f ] or as [f ]. The middle-class merger is...
متن کاملThe design and validation of production of poly-syllabic words test in 4-7 years-old Persian speaking children: a preliminary study
abstract objective: Reviewing the literature related to the use of polysyllabic words in the assessment of children's speech sound disorders (SSD) indicated the necessity of using these words to provide additional information to the information of the more common tests, such as prognostic information. Despite strong literature background in other languages, there was not any research that ex...
